Iodine is not universally recommended for thyroid patients. Some practitioners believe that iodine is an irritant to autoimmune thyroid disease, and can, in particular, worsen hypothyroidism. This is so interesting, when I was 16 and going in for my first catscan I had an amazingly awful reaction to iodine.
After many ups and downs I was x'd with an autoimmune thyroid disorder....

I was told that we get enough iodine naturally in iodized salt and seafoods that there's no need to supplement and that too much is baaaaaaaad. :)
