Then the subtraction came. You remember "Mom, I am a plus girl, I don't do subtraction." I could see her fighting it a little. But she was ok - some tricks I was so surprised at. I mean, I just learned the facts, I didn't need/want the additional cues. But I am all about finding out whatever will work for her.
And this one - for subtraction... you remember the words, bigger, bottom, borrow. That really clicked for H1. She knows how to borrow - but for some reason, she would get a brain freeze looking at it. This gets her over the "freeze".

Ages 8 & up. Learn memory tricks that make adding, subtracting and multiplying easy. Parents are encouraged to attend at no charge.The first night focuses on addition and subtracting skills. On the second night learn multiplication memorization tricks. Bring a notebook and pencil to class. Parent comment from previous class: “I wish I would have learned math facts this way when I was in school.”
