A special tool

"Daddy, Daddy, Daddy - you're home!!!"
"Daddy did you fix the bridge yet?"
"Daddy do you know what happened?"

hugs, shouts of joy and questions

Late Friday night, the kids were up late, a few HOURS after bedtime, but we got a call from H and he was on his way home. I told the kids they could wait up for him.

Since the bridge collapsed, they had not seen Daddy. Now, for some families, this wouldn't be a big deal, Daddy is away a lot, they are used to it. For our family, it is a big deal. But I had already taken the time to explain to the kids, why Daddy wasn't home and that it might be a while until they saw him. They knew he was going to be tired and he was working really hard. I let them see the images of the bridge on Thursday. Not the gruesome ones, just a few, so that they could understand what all the fuss was about.

I had explained the bridge collapse to them and explained what Daddy was doing. But in their kid world it was all changed a bit..

After the above questions, they turned a bit more serious... H2 asked H -
"Daddy, there are still people under the bridge?"
"Yes, honey there are still people down there."
"In the water?"
"Yes."
"Are they dead, Daddy?"
"Probably."

Daddy had to take a bit of a break - OK let's be blunt - he had to use the bathroom.

H1 and H2 sat on the couch talking very seriously to each other, the super hushed tones were evident.

H comes back into the room. H1, "Daddy, H2 and I decided that we would be extremely good and that we will ask for a very, VERY special tool that will help you fix the bridge."

They were so sincere, so honest in their hearts, that a special tool could fix this for Daddy.

H just hugged them and didn't try to change what they thought. They are still kids, let them have their dreams.
